Wiltshire Sheep

Our first sheep were Arapawa's, but they presented two major issues for us. Shearing costs when the wool was of little value, and their feet could not cope with the softer and wetter soils  of the Manawatu.

Later in 2012, we had the pleasure of meeting three local Wiltshire breeders. We discussed our concerns and were sold on the benefits of the Wiltshire breed, so the decision was made, sourcing our original flock from all three farms for some genetic diversity.

We continue to breed our white Wiltshire flock as we use this as a base to continually improve and broaden the genetic base of the Blackshire flock to prevent in breeding.

Wiltshire sheep fully shed each year eliminating the hassle and costs of arranging a mobile shearer each year. The wool falls off and blows away. They look a little untidy for a short period but your local birdlife will thank you for the wool that they collect for their nests. They have a clear belly/breach area rarely requiring crutching. They have good animal health rarely requiring drenching. Fly strike is extremely rare on Wilthsire sheep.

Each year we have a number of ewes and lambs for sale for breeding. The white flock also carry the recessive black gene and when run with a Blackshire ram, we consistently get approx 40% black lambs each season.
